Pianist, accompanist and chamber musician

I have performed throughout my career as a pianist, in solo recitals, with singers and in chamber ensembles. My programmes have ranged from Mozart and Beethoven to Delius, Wagner, Jewish music and contemporary repertoire. I have appeared for music societies and concert series in London and elsewhere, including concerts at St James's Piccadilly and St Martin-in-the-Fields. These performances have taken several forms: conventional recitals, song programmes, chamber concerts, lecture-recitals and events in which performance forms part of a wider historical or analytical presentation.

I have been fortunate to have studied piano with professors Yu Chun-Yee, Kendall Taylor, John Barstow and Benjamin Kaplan. I have given numerous concerts and lecture-recitals, including several for the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe, solo, vocal and chamber. Recent events have included a lecture-recital connected with the publication of my book Boundaries, Space and Register in Beethoven's Piano Music, in which Julian Jacobson joined me to perform and discuss works. In the past concerts of Beethoven’s chamber works coupled with other composers.

I have also performed regularly with singers and have given several recitals devoted to Wagner's songs with different artists. In 2008 I accompanied the late South African-born dramatic soprano Elizabeth Connell in the opening recital of a new monthly series of vocal and chamber music at the Foundling Museum. The programme brought together Beethoven's rarely heard Goethe settings, Op. 83; settings of Goethe's Gretchen by Schubert and Wagner; three early Wagner songs to French texts; and the Wesendonck Lieder. In Musical Opinion, Robert Matthew-Walker praised Connell's "complete grasp of the Wagnerian idiom". During the Wagner bicentenary in 2013, I gave a further Wagner song recital at a Leeds University conference for the Wagner bicentenary. Other vocal collaborations have centred on Jewish and Israeli repertoire, bringing unfamiliar songs before new audiences. In November 2025 I gave a talk and recital at UCLA for the Lowell Milken Center for Music of American Jewish Experience and the Department of Musicology. The event launched Classical and Popular Music in Israel: Transcultural Dialogues and Contrasts. I performed with mezzo-soprano Iris Malkin in songs by Yehezkel Braun and in the American premiere of songs from Oded Zehavi's Resonating Voices, as well as playing solo works by Paul Ben-Haim and Josef Tal. The event brought together several aspects of my work—as editor, lecturer, researcher, accompanist and solo pianist—within a single programme.

My lecture-recitals for the Jewish Music Institute have likewise combined performance with historical and cultural introduction. They have included programmes devoted to Jewish composers, Israeli music and the shofar, involving singers and instrumentalists as well as solo piano music. For repertoire still insufficiently represented in mainstream concert programmes, explanation supplies context while the music itself remains at the centre.

Recordings and arrangements

My principal piano recording is Delius's complete music for violin and piano, issued by Meridian, and an album of short violin and piano pieces for SAIN. BBC Music Magazine praised the Delius. Several of my arrangements for violin and piano have also been released on CD.

Shofar, voice & experimental performance

The shofar has been the most unusual strand of my performing work. I have explored its melodic and expressive possibilities as a soloist, in ensembles and alongside voices and conventional instruments. In November 2006 I played a kudu shofar in Elgar's The Apostles with Winchester Music Club, conducted by Nicholas Wilks in Winchester Cathedral. Elgar's ancient Hebrew horn is commonly replaced by a modern brass instrument, but the Club's own history records that this performance incorporated a genuine Jewish shofar.

I have also organised and performed with groups of shofar players. For the BBC Radio 4 drama Project Jericho, I assembled an ensemble of seven shofars, recalling the seven biblical horns and creating a powerful collective sound for radio.

I appear as cantor and vocalist on Towering Inferno's Kaddish, a large-scale experimental meditation on Europe and the Holocaust recorded between 1991 and 1993 and released internationally by Island Records in 1995. My voice is heard on three tracks, including “The Rose” and “Prayer,” alongside contributors including Hungarian singer Márta Sebestyén and performance poet Endre Szkárosi. The album draws cantorial singing, folk traditions, electronics, instrumental music and documentary sound into an intense multimedia conception of memory and loss.

Composer & performer

My compositions have often arisen from particular performers, occasions or documentary subjects. The Concertino for Shofars and Ensemble, performed at the Purcell Room, Southbank Centre, in 2006, treats the shofar as a concert instrument capable of sustained pitches, melodic shaping and exchange with an instrumental ensemble. My Israel Jubilee Fanfare was performed at St John's Smith Square in 1998 by twelve shofar players divided between the gallery and stage, in the presence of the Minister for the Arts and the Israeli Ambassador. An expanded event later brought together fifty-nine performers in what was described as the world's largest shofar orchestra.

I have also composed several short film scores for testimony-based historical films by Dr Bea Lewkowicz, performing the music on their soundtracks. The music must support the individual voice and historical material without overwhelming them, connecting composition and performance with my wider interest in exile, memory and the transmission of personal histories. From Mozart and Beethoven recitals to Jewish song, chamber music, recordings, film scores and performances on the shofar, my work as a performer has taken many forms. What matters throughout is communication with an audience and with other musicians: bringing scholarship into live performance when it is useful, but above all allowing the music, familiar or unfamiliar, to be heard.
