
Beethoven
Beethoven's music has been studied from almost every conceivable perspective: harmony, form, rhythm, motivic development, historical context and biography. Yet one fundamental dimension has received surprisingly little sustained attention—the role of musical space itself. My own research begins with a deceptively simple question: what happens if we listen not only to what Beethoven writes, but also to where he places it?
Over many years I have come to think of Beethoven as a kind of explorer—not of outer space, but of musical space. His music inhabits two closely related worlds: the sonic space between the highest and lowest registers, and the physical space of the keyboard itself across which the performer moves. These two dimensions constantly interact. Register is not simply a neutral location for notes, nor merely a by-product of harmony. It is an expressive resource that Beethoven shapes with extraordinary imagination, inviting listeners to experience musical space as an active part of the drama.
This perspective has gradually become the central thread running through my research. Rather than treating register as something incidental, I explore how Beethoven establishes musical boundaries, crosses them, stretches them and sometimes deliberately withholds them. The resulting patterns are closely related to expression, form and tonal process, revealing new ways of understanding works that have been familiar to performers and listeners for generations.
My recent book, Boundaries, Space and Register in Beethoven's Piano Music, develops these ideas across the piano sonatas and many other keyboard works. The project grew from a conviction that Beethoven's music is not only a story of harmony and thematic development but also one of continually evolving musical landscapes. Just as composers manipulate rhythm, texture and harmony, Beethoven shapes space itself, creating journeys across the keyboard that become integral to the expressive life of each work.
The relationship between sound and performance has always been equally important to me. I am interested not only in the sonic distance between registers, but also in the performer's physical experience of that distance. The keyboard is both an acoustic and a bodily space. A pianist does not merely hear Beethoven's expanding musical horizons but physically inhabits them, continually adjusting gesture, balance and movement as the music unfolds. This dialogue between sound and embodiment has increasingly become part of my research, linking analytical enquiry with the lived experience of performance.
To investigate these questions I have developed a series of analytical methods over many years. Registral Graphs and Pitch Space Maps trace the changing disposition of musical space across a composition, revealing boundaries, thresholds and large-scale registral designs that are often difficult to perceive through conventional notation alone. More recently I have introduced the concept of Span Modulation, which examines the constantly changing physical span between the pianist's hands, showing how the embodied experience of performance can illuminate Beethoven's compositional thinking. These methods are not intended to replace traditional analysis, but to complement it by bringing another expressive dimension into view.
One of the most satisfying aspects of this work has been discovering how analytical ideas can enrich live performance. My lecture-recitals seek to bring scholarship directly into the concert hall, allowing audiences to hear familiar music with fresh ears. At a recent lecture-recital presented by the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe, I explored the first movement of the Piano Sonata in F sharp major, Op. 78, before pianist Julian Jacobson performed the complete work. Here the interaction between musical analysis and performance became especially vivid: a single withheld high note emerged not merely as a technical detail, but as part of Beethoven's larger expressive strategy, demonstrating how absence can be every bit as powerful as presence.
Although much of this research has focused on the piano sonatas, its implications extend well beyond them. Earlier work on the Razumovsky Quartets first suggested that register itself could function as a structural agent, and many of the ideas developed in the piano music now illuminate Beethoven's chamber music and later works more generally. Increasingly, I have come to see musical space as one of the defining characteristics of Beethoven's mature style, shaping not only local gestures but the architecture of entire movements.
This work has also led naturally to wider questions about musical meaning. Why does a particular register convey intimacy, transcendence, tension or release? How do listeners experience musical height and depth? How does the performer's physical engagement with the keyboard contribute to expressive understanding? These questions connect analytical study with aesthetics, psychology and performance, opening conversations that extend beyond Beethoven himself.
My continuing research develops these ideas further through conference papers, journal articles and new analytical methods, most recently exploring the concept of Span Modulation and its relationship to embodied musical gesture. What continues to fascinate me is that Beethoven's music, perhaps more than any other, still rewards new ways of listening. The familiar masterpieces are far from exhausted; viewed through the intertwined perspectives of sonic space, physical gesture and expressive meaning, they continue to reveal landscapes that remain remarkably fresh.
For me, Beethoven's music is an invitation to exploration. The more closely we listen to the relationship between sound, space and performance, the more vividly his extraordinary musical imagination comes into focus—and the more there is still to discover.
